Steven reviews the guides on this site for accuracy against how bank credit assessment actually works. Eighteen years in Malaysian banking, in SME credit and business banking relationship management.
Steven Law has spent eighteen years in Malaysian banking and financial services, most of it in roles where business lending is either assessed or prepared for assessment. He started in personal banking in 2008, moved into SME banking in 2012, and has worked in business banking relationship management and SME credit since 2016, most recently as a senior business banking specialist.
His day-to-day work is the subject this site covers. Assessing a company’s financial position, cash flow and business performance. Reviewing management accounts and audited statements against what a credit committee will accept. Structuring financing to fit the business rather than the other way round. Preparing credit proposals and supporting documentation for internal credit assessment. He has handled applications for working capital facilities, term financing and overdrafts for clients in trading, manufacturing, services, construction and professional services.
He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman.
Institutions are described here by role rather than named, in line with the rest of this site, which carries no bank names anywhere. His professional history is set out in full on his LinkedIn profile.
Steven reads each guide before it is published, and again whenever it is revised. He is checking three things: that the description of how banks assess an application matches how they actually assess one, that nothing overstates what an applicant can reasonably expect, and that no figure is asserted where the real position is uncertain. Where a guide is wrong, it is corrected before publication rather than after.
He does not write the guides, and he is not one of SMEBox’s advisers. His role is to check what is published against how bank credit assessment works in practice, which is a narrower job than authorship and a more useful one for a reader deciding whether to trust what they are reading.
A review is not a personal recommendation, and it is not advice on your circumstances. Steven does not assess individual applications for SMEBox, does not decide what any bank will approve, and has no role in the facilities SMEBox arranges. Everything on this site remains general information.
Each guide carries the date it was last reviewed. Reviews are repeated at least every six months, or sooner when the rules change.
