What this site stores on your device, what each cookie is for, how long it lasts, and how to limit or stop it.
A cookie is a small text file a website asks your browser to keep. Browsers also offer local storage, which does the same job in a slightly different way. This policy covers both, and uses the word cookie for both because that is what people call them. Some are set by us and some by services we use, and the table below names every one.

The first two rows are set by this site and are the only storage it uses on its own. The exact names and lifetimes of the Google cookies are set by Google, not by us, and may change. Google’s own description of them is on its cookies page.
Two items are stored by this site: the language you chose and a note that you have seen the cookie reminder. Both stay on your own device, neither identifies you, and nothing is sent to us or to anyone else. Your browser can block them, and the site still works if you do.
This site uses Google Analytics and Google Ads measurement. They are active when you visit, and we show a short reminder at the start of each visit to tell you so. We use analytics to see which guides are actually read, which is how we decide what to write next, and advertising measurement to tell whether an enquiry followed an advertisement we paid for.
We do not sell the data these cookies produce, and we do not use them to build a profile of you for anyone else.
You can block or delete cookies at any time in your browser’s privacy or site data settings. Google also offers a free browser add-on that stops Google Analytics measuring your visits, and lets you adjust how advertising is personalised for you in your Google account. Blocking everything leaves the site usable, though the language switch will reset as you move between pages. Where a cookie collects information that can identify you, it is personal data and the privacy notice applies to it as well as this policy. The privacy notice sets out the legal basis we rely on, how long we keep data, and how to ask for a copy of what we hold.
If the cookies we set change, this page is updated and the date below changes with it. Where the change is material, we will say so at the top of this page.
